Hitchcock sets the stage for suspense with The Birds by introducing Daniels and Brenner and their relationship, long before the action begins. Evan Hunter (better known as Ed McBain) adapted the screenplay from the Daphne Du Maurier novella. His use of electronic music instead of a musical score was very effective. Hitchcock used research to prepare for his film about a bizarre real-life attack of herringwaters that smoked located in Capitola (California) from 1961. It was believed that diatom poisoning caused the acute aggression of the birds after they ate anchovies.
